Why did Christ curse the fig tree?
It is written in the Gospel of Mark chapter 11 verse 13 And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, He came, if perhaps He might find anything on it. And when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.
And also it is written in the Gospel of Mark chapter 11 verses 20-21 And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. And Peter, remembering, said to Him, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away."
What fault did the fig tree have to be cursed?
The answer
What the Lord Christ did here carried a prophecy toward the Jewish nation. The leafy fig tree that bore no fruit was a symbol of this Jewish nation, from which God came incarnate, yet it rejected Him, as it is written in the Gospel of John chapter 1 verse 11: He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. Thus the curse came upon them as a prophecy, as Jeremiah the prophet said long ago, as written in the Book of Jeremiah chapter 8 verse 13: "I will surely consume them, says the Lord. No grapes shall be on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade, and the things I have given them shall pass away from them."
This fig tree is like the hypocrite who pretends to be pious while being empty of it. He has the outward signs of holiness, but his heart is full of impurity. It also points to the Jewish nation, which God honored with laws, commandments, and prophets, yet it was devoid of faith, love, and humility. It rejected Christ, did not obey His commands, and did not bear fruit, but relied on being the people of God.
Cursing the fig tree was a prophecy about the future of the Jewish nation and a warning to people in every age: if they do not bear the fruits of holiness and piety, the righteous judgment of God will come upon them. The saying, "the fig tree withered away immediately," is a reference to the destruction of the city of Jerusalem and the punishment of the Jewish nation. All the works of Christ were based on mercy, yet He taught His disciples that He is severe in punishment, even though He is merciful.
